The English physician William Woodville's series, Medical Botany, was first published as three volumes, with a supplement, from 1790 to 1794, and featured 275 illustrations by James Sowerby, printed as copper engravings at 24 cm plate size. Woodville's compendium was so popular that a third edition of five volumes appeared in 1832, with 39 additional plant descriptions by William Jackson Hooker.
