William L. Brown was a leader in the worldwide effort to halt the erosion of genetic diversity among crop plants and their wild relatives. A plant breeder and geneticist, Brown worked tirelessly to promote the conservation of the land races and relatives of crops that are critical for the future of plant breeding. He completed his graduate study at the Missouri Botanical Garden and went on to serve as Chief Executive Officer of Pioneer Hi-Bred International. The William L. Brown Center for Plant Genetic Resources is named in his honor.
