John Charles Fremont is a fascinating character in the history of the American West. He was many things—including a topographer, explorer, presidential candidate, governor, military officer, husband and father, among others. These aspects of his life are well documented in the literature. What is less well known are his roles as botanical pioneer, collector, and coauthor. It is these roles that are the focus of this book. Fremont and his men, in five expeditions from 1842 to 1854, left a legacy of information that included maps, climatic information, camp localities, and distances. These data were used by pioneers who surged into the American West during the great migrations of the middle nineteenth century. These expeditions also yielded hundreds of plant specimens, which added to the scant botanical data base then available. Fremont's botanical exploration and his collections, together with his written materials and those publications by others reflecting on his role in botany, form the basis of this work. A gifted writer and researcher, Stanley Welsh brings Fremont's accomplishments, and failures, to life and places his botanical contributions in perspective.
